Star Trek: New Frontier is a series of interlinked novels written by Peter David, published between 1997 and 2015. Unlike other Star Trek books, it was the first tie-in fiction property not based on a television series. The story follows the adventures of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the USS Excalibur, set in the same timeline as The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.
The series was created to allow for serialized storytelling, meaning characters could evolve, change, and even die—something that was restricted in other Star Trek novels. Over the years, 24 novels, a short story anthology, and two graphic novels were published. The books introduced original characters while also incorporating familiar faces from The Next Generation
